1. The ideal customer (as seen by the translator)

The ideal customer

  • sets clear but sufficient deadlines
  • makes sure that the translator gets the final copy of the manuscript to start his translation
  • shows confidence in the translator, even in languages that the customer understands
  • supplies the translator with all documents and translation aids without request
  • readily answers questions, as he is aware that the translator cannot have the same level of knowledge as himself in his own field
  • gives feedback on the work delivered, so that the translator can improve.

  • gets to know his customers, their companies, their products and needs
  • knows his own linguistic and technical limits
  • entertains good relations with his colleagues (specialized in other languages or fields) as well as layouters, with desk-toppers, advertising agents, printers etc.
